🎓 BCom Law Spotify Wrapped

These past three years at Wits have flown by, leaving me feeling nostalgic. To relive my BCom Law journey, I’ve created a Spotify Wrapped-inspired breakdown of my undergrad experience. I’ll be reviewing the modules of each year, share my honest impressions, and offer practical tips to help navigate this degree like a pro!

Spoiler: it’s been a mix of modules competing for 'Most Tears Shed' and 'Unexpected Wins.'

🌟 Opening Track: Choosing BCom Law

Choosing BCom Law before pursuing my LLB? A 10/10 decision I’d highly recommend! It gave me the chance to explore subjects like Insurance (my major) and Marketing (my minor) alongside law. These options made the degree more well-rounded—perhaps a little chaotic at times, but worth it.

First Year: The Debut Album - Learning the Basics 🎤

  1. Introduction to Law:

    • Genre: Hard Rock – A tough first listen but builds your resilience.

    • Review: Not my favourite, It’s more about learning how to study law than loving it. Don’t let it scare you off!

    • Pro Tip: Practice case reading early – it’s a skill you’ll need throughout your degree.

  2. Law of Persons:

    • Genre: Feel-Good Pop – The first hint that law can be enjoyable.

    • Review: This module was a warm introduction to human-focused legal issues.

    • Pro Tip: Think of it like real-life gossip by linking the law to everyday interactions. It makes studying way more interesting (and maybe a bit more dramatic).

  3. Economics:

    • First Semester (Microeconomics): Indie Folk – Relaxed but with hidden depth – A chill start, but can be overwhelming at times. Don’t fall behind on the basics.

    • Second Semester (Macroeconomics): Lo-fi Chill Beats – Easier to vibe with and a smoother ride if you survive Micro.

    • Pro Tip: Past papers and consistent practice are your best friends here and don’t let the graphs intimidate you.

  4. Comp Maths & Stats:

    • Genre: Heavy Metal – Loud, confusing, and emotional.

    • Review: The "Most Tears Shed" category winner.

    • Pro Tip: Start working from Day 1. Don’t let confusion pile up—it’ll only snowball (trust me, I learnt that the hard way).

  5. Information Systems:

    • Genre: Background Ambient – So uneventful I barely remember it (thank you, online learning).

    • Pro Tip: Keep up with assignments — it’s not a monster if you manage it well.

🎯 Verdict: First year is tough, but it’s all about building good habits and staying consistent. Stick with it, keep practicing, and by the end, you’ll feel way more confident.

Second Year: The Compilation - Fine-Tuning the Tracks 🎶

  1. Family Law:

    • Genre: Acoustic Ballad – A divisive one—either you’ll love it or hate it.

    • Review: Straightforward but not the most exciting for me.

    • Pro Tip: Even if it’s not your favourite, this module can boost your average.

  2. Constitutional Law:

    • Genre: Indie Rock – Bold and thought-provoking, but not for everyone.

    • Review: Personally loved it—it is manageable and rewarding.

    • Pro Tip: Critical thinking is key! Read problem questions carefully and sharpen your critical thinking skills for success in this module.

  3. Insurance & Marketing (Chosen Electives):

    • Genre: Electro Pop – Refreshing and energising.

    • Review: A much-needed break from legal intensity.

    • Pro Tip: Engage actively; these courses offer insights beyond academics. Make the most of them!

🎯 The Verdict: Second year is where you can truly find your flow. Focus, do not fall behind, and watch your average rise.

Third Year: The Final Countdown - Finishing Strong 🎸

  1. Criminal Law:

    • Genre: Classic Rock – Complex but timeless.

    • Review: Ms. Starosta – A legend. If you pay attention in her lectures, you’ll succeed. Stay engaged and on top of the material. It’s challenging, but interesting.

    • Pro Tip: With fewer assessments, ace each one by preparing thoroughly.

  2. Delict:

    • Genre: R&B – Smooth

    • Review: Surprisingly enjoyable and logical.

    • Pro Tip: Memorise the legal memo principles so you can focus on application during tests.

  3. Jurisprudence:

    • Genre: Prog Rock – Long readings, deep concepts, and occasional existential crises.

    • Review: Working smart — I focused on readings that aligned with essay topics.

    • Pro Tip: Prioritise and manage your time; this course can overwhelm you if left unchecked.

  4. Insurance (Chosen Major):

    • First Semester: Death Metal – Intense and unforgiving. Let me just say there were tears. Lots of them.

    • Second Semester: Soft Jazz– A welcome cooldown and much more manageable, thankfully (and possibly why I’m graduating).

    • Pro Tip: Regular consultations and consistent effort are essential to survive, especially for first semester.

Highlights Reel

  • Most Played Track: Criminal Law Power Ballad - Thanks to engaging teaching and interesting cases.

  • Sleeper Hit: Law of Persons Pop Anthem- Surprisingly engaging for a first-year module.

  • Biggest Tearjerker: Comp Maths and Stats Scream-Along - No further explanation needed.
